Can anxiety cause muscle twitching?

Yes, anxiety can cause muscle twitching because adrenaline and over-breathing make your nerves fire more easily.

What happens in your muscles

A twitch is a small group of muscle fibers firing on its own, too small to move your arm or leg. Common places to feel one are the eyelid, calf, thigh, arm and hand.

When you are anxious, your body enters alert mode. Adrenaline and over-breathing make your nerves fire more easily, so twitches and cramps come more often.

Why it feels so alarming

Many people have small twitches all the time without noticing them. Once a twitch catches your attention and scares you, watching for the next one makes you notice far more of them.

Twitches with no weakness and no change in the size of the muscle are common and usually not dangerous. When you see a doctor about twitching, weakness is what they check for first.

Attention on a pleasant sensation, like your feet on the floor, is the opposite of a panic spiral.

Why twitches keep coming back

After weeks of anxiety, your body can stop switching between rest mode and alert mode and stay in alert mode. Because the body holds that state, twitches can show up on days you do not feel anxious.

Caffeine, tiredness, poor sleep, hard exercise and not drinking enough water all make twitches more likely.

This state is trainable with daily practice.

Try a Full Body Shake

  1. Stand with your feet hip-width apart and your knees slightly bent.
  2. Let movement start in your hands and arms, then let it spread to your shoulders and chest, then your hips, then your legs and feet.
  3. Let it get bigger and looser, with sighs and yawns welcome.
  4. Then stop and stand completely still for 5 seconds and notice.

When to check with a doctor

  • It comes with a drooping face, slurred speech or weakness on one side (call emergency services).
  • You have weakness that keeps happening: tripping, dropping things, trouble gripping, swallowing or speaking (see a doctor soon).
  • A muscle looks thinner than the same muscle on the other side.
  • Twitches come with cramps and numbness or tingling that keep spreading.
  • An eyelid twitch lasts more than 2 weeks, closes your eye fully, or spreads to other parts of your face.
  • It started with a new medicine.
