Can anxiety cause itchy skin?
Yes, anxiety can make your skin itch, with or without a rash. Stress chemicals can release histamine in the skin, and heat, sweat and watching the itch make it stronger.
Try the practice nowWhat happens in your skin
When you feel anxious, your body switches into alert mode. During alert mode, stress chemicals can make immune cells in your skin release histamine. Histamine is the same chemical behind itchy hives, so your skin can start itching even when nothing outside has touched it.
Alert mode also brings extra heat and sweat to your skin, which can add a prickly feeling.
How the itch feeds itself
When an unexplained itch starts up, your attention locks onto that patch of skin. Paying close attention to the skin makes the itch feel stronger and harder to ignore.
Scratching to get relief irritates the surface of your skin, which makes the spot itch even more. That loop is called the itch-scratch cycle.
Itch from anxiety is not dangerous. Placing your attention on a pleasant sensation, like cool air on your arms, is the opposite of a panic spiral.
Why it happens on calm days
After weeks of anxiety, your body can stop switching between rest mode and alert mode and stay in alert mode. Because your body holds that state, the itch can show up on days you do not feel anxious.
This state is trainable with daily practice.

Common questions
What does anxiety itching feel like when there is no rash?
An ordinary itch, or prickling, crawling or burning.
Can stress flare up skin conditions I already have?
Yes, stress often flares skin conditions that people already live with, such as eczema, psoriasis and hives.
What helps break the itch-scratch cycle?
A cool shower or a cool damp cloth on the spot helps calm the surface right away. Moisturizing, wearing loose cotton clothes and keeping your nails short also protect your skin so scratching does not keep the cycle going.
